Apple has requested regulatory approval to launch satellite services in India

The launch of Apple’s satellite internet service in India is currently being planned. Spectrum will shortly be distributed to all service providers by the telecom regulator. Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently declared that the regulator is working to finalize a framework for this distribution, which would be handled administratively. Companies like Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon Kuiper are competing with Jio and Airtel to offer satellite broadband in India, and now Apple has also entered the fray.

Apple’s satellite service partner, Globalstar, has requested regulatory authority to begin operations in India. Apple and Globalstar are stepping up their combat with Jio, Starlink, Amazon Kuiper, OneWeb, and Airtel Eutelsat with this initiative. In order to secure the required clearances, Globalstar reportedly contacted the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe).

According to an media article, a person with knowledge of the matter said Globalstar is hopeful that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) would grant it a Global Mobile Personal Communication (GMPCS) license for its satellite service in the near future. The business has not yet applied for a commercial license, but it has already presented the DoT with a number of use cases, especially in disaster management.

For a certain amount of time, the Department of Telecommunications allots spectrum to service providers so they can showcase and test their offerings. The terms of non-interference, non-protection, and non-commercial service apply to this allotment. Only testing and experimenting are permitted on the spectrum. Satellite operators require both an IN-SPACe authorization and a GMPCS license in order to begin operations in India.

In 2022, Apple teamed up with Globalstar to provide satellite connection. The iPhone 14 series now has a satellite capability that enables customers to send and receive messages in an emergency without a cell network. Every iPhone model that has been launched since 2022 includes this feature.
