Anthropic to use Google AI chips worth tens of billions to train Claude chatbot

Anthropic is expanding its partnership with Google to use up to one million artificial intelligence chips, valued at tens of billions of dollars, as it accelerates the development of its AI systems. The agreement, announced on Thursday, will give Anthropic access to over one gigawatt of computing capacity starting in 2026 to train the next generation of its Claude AI model using Google’s tensor processing units, or TPUs, previously reserved for internal use.

Anthropic cited the TPUs’ efficiency, strong price-performance ratio, and its prior experience with these processors as key reasons for the choice. Google will also provide additional cloud computing services to support the AI startup.

The deal highlights the intense demand for AI chips, as companies compete to build technology capable of matching or surpassing human intelligence. Alphabet-owned Google offers TPUs as an alternative to Nvidia chips, which are currently in limited supply.

Rival OpenAI has signed multiple deals costing over $1 trillion to secure around 26 gigawatts of computing capacity, enough to power roughly 20 million U.S. homes. Industry executives estimate that one gigawatt of compute can cost about $50 billion. OpenAI is using Nvidia graphics processing units and AMD AI chips to meet growing demand.

Reports indicate that Anthropic expects to more than double, and possibly nearly triple, its annual revenue next year, driven by strong adoption of its enterprise AI products. The startup focuses on AI safety and enterprise use cases, with its models supporting growth in vibe coding startups such as Cursor.

Anthropic’s expansion underscores the race among AI companies to scale computing infrastructure, enhance model performance, and secure a leading position in the rapidly evolving AI market.
