Perplexity is set to introduce a new free product for its users. The company, known for its answer engine platform and the Comet artificial intelligence browser, is now planning to launch a tool focused on agentic shopping. This new offering will follow the Buy with Pro tool, which has so far been available only to paid subscribers. The development comes at a time when both OpenAI and Google have introduced similar shopping features within their chatbots.
Perplexity to offer agentic shopping at no cost
OpenAI launched its Instant Checkout tool in September, allowing users to buy items without leaving ChatGPT. Earlier this month, Google added new shopping features to Gemini and AI Mode. Perplexity may be entering this space later than its rivals, but its platforms have consistently prioritised shopping functionalities.
The Buy with Pro feature on the Perplexity app and website already allows paid users to purchase products from within the platform. The Comet browser also supports agentic functions that help users place orders directly on an e commerce website. The upcoming free product appears to be another tool that offers similar capabilities.
According to sources, the company’s free agentic shopping tool may be introduced next week in the United States. Dmitry Shevelenko, Chief Business Officer at Perplexity, told the media:
“The agentic part is the seamless purchase right from the answer. Most people want to still do their own research. They want that streamlined and simplified, and so that is the part that is agentic in this launch.”
No further details were shared about the product or how its agentic features will work. It is expected to offer an experience similar to Buy with Pro. Shevelenko reportedly did not comment on whether Perplexity plans to earn revenue from the transactions.
In a separate announcement, Alex Chriss, Chief Executive Officer of PayPal, confirmed a new partnership with Perplexity. Through this collaboration, PayPal users will be able to search, shop and pay using PayPal’s payment service within Perplexity’s website and app. This feature will go live next week. It remains unclear whether the free agentic shopping tool is linked to the PayPal partnership.
