Anthropic has announced that it has secured new investments of up to fifteen billion dollars from Microsoft and Nvidia. This takes the company’s valuation to three hundred and fifty billion dollars, rising from one hundred and eighty three billion dollars recorded in September.
The three companies have entered a large scale partnership focused on speeding up the development of advanced AI models. Under this agreement, Microsoft and Nvidia will together invest up to fifteen billion dollars in Anthropic, which is a major competitor to OpenAI and a preferred choice for many developers and businesses.
In a video message, Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella said that OpenAI “remains a critical partner” but noted that the companies will increasingly work as customers of each other. He added, “We will use Anthropic models, they will use our infrastructure, and we will go to market together.”
Anthropic also confirmed that it will purchase thirty billion dollars worth of computing capacity from Microsoft Azure, which will be powered by Nvidia AI systems. Nvidia will support Anthropic with design and engineering collaboration. Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said in a video message, “This is a dream come true for us. You know, we have admired the work of Anthropic and Dario for a long time, and this is the first time we are going to deeply partner with Anthropic to accelerate Claude.”
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI leaders, including its Chief Executive Dario Amodei. The company is backed by Amazon and is known for creating the Claude family of large language models. Its latest model, Claude Sonnet four point five, can follow instructions more accurately and can write code autonomously for up to thirty hours.
Microsoft’s five billion dollar investment comes at a time when the company aims to reduce its dependence on OpenAI. OpenAI recently completed a recapitalisation and renewed its partnership with Microsoft. Microsoft now holds a stake valued at one hundred and thirty five billion dollars, equal to about twenty seven per cent of the company on an as converted diluted basis.
Amazon Web Services remained Anthropic’s main cloud and training partner through 2023 and 2024. Microsoft has now confirmed that Anthropic models will also be accessible on Azure.
The new investments highlight the growing trend of circular financing in artificial intelligence. Major technology companies are increasingly investing in one another, even as they compete. In such circular arrangements, one company pays another, and the second company then returns to purchase services from the first. Some analysts believe the potential gains could reach trillions, but they also warn that if one major company fails, it could trigger wider economic risks.
