UIDAI offers free biometric update for children aged 7 to 15 in 2025

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced a free biometric update for children aged 7 to 15, starting 1 October 2025. This initiative is part of efforts to make the Mandatory Biometric Update process easier and more accessible for families. The updates, which include fresh fingerprints, iris scans and photographs, are required at the ages of 5 and 15 to ensure that children’s Aadhaar records remain accurate.

To make the process more efficient, UIDAI has partnered with a behavioural research organisation to understand why parents often delay these updates. Many parents postpone the updates due to confusion, lack of awareness, or inconvenience, which can affect a child’s access to Aadhaar-linked services. The research team plans to design reminders, communication tools, and simple nudges to guide families and ensure updates are completed without stress.

As a further incentive, UIDAI has waived the biometric update fee for children between 7 and 15 for one year. This temporary waiver is expected to remove financial barriers and encourage millions of families to complete the updates on time. Highlighting the importance of this approach, the UIDAI CEO said, “Blending technology with an understanding of human behaviour will help make Aadhaar services more user-friendly.” She added that the initiative will create a smoother experience for families while keeping children’s Aadhaar records accurate.

Timely biometric updates are critical for maintaining valid Aadhaar details, which are linked to government schemes, identity documents, education benefits and welfare programmes. The CEO of the research organisation noted, “Evidence-based behavioural methods can make a major difference in increasing the rate of timely updates, ensuring children continue to access essential services linked to Aadhaar.” Parents can visit any authorised Aadhaar Enrolment Centre with their child’s Aadhaar number to complete the updates, and the full list of centres is available on the official Aadhaar portal.
