Apple’s next iPhone Air may skip a 2025 launch

Apple’s upcoming iPhone Air has become a subject of interest after new reports outlined what the second generation model could offer and why its launch timeline may shift. Insights shared by a common publication and a well known technology reporter indicate that the device is moving on a different schedule than Apple’s usual annual cycle.

A recent report suggested that the iPhone Air 2 had been delayed because of lower than expected demand and to allow time for the addition of a second rear camera. However, the technology reporter’s latest update states that Apple had not planned a release for next year for several months. This suggests that Apple intended the Air series to follow a flexible launch rhythm rather than an annual upgrade pattern.

The main focus for the next iPhone Air is expected to be the introduction of a new 2 nanometre processor. The technology reporter says in a newsletter that Apple aims to use the A20 chip built on the N2 process from a major semiconductor manufacturer. This advancement should deliver better energy efficiency and improved battery life, making it the central feature of the device.

The idea of a second rear camera now appears unlikely. The technology reporter notes that the current camera area has limited space, and redesigning it to add a rarely used lens would require extensive changes. Such an update may only be feasible if Apple decides to extend the dual camera layout of its future foldable iPhone to the wider product range.

Reports indicate that Apple expected the iPhone Air to contribute about 6 percent to 8 percent of new iPhone sales. This places it in the same performance bracket as the iPhone 16 Plus and positions it as a focused product for a smaller audience.

The technology reporter also outlined Apple’s future release cycle. In autumn 2026, the company is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max and its first foldable iPhone. About six months later, the iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e and possibly an updated iPhone Air may follow. Apple is expected to continue this staggered launch pattern with five or six new models each year.

The iPhone Air also plays a strategic role inside Apple. According to the technology reporter, the device acts as a testing ground for materials, compact components, battery systems and software technologies that will eventually support Apple’s foldable iPhone.
