China and ASEAN nations strengthen cooperation to tackle cybercrime and telecom fraud

China and five ASEAN member countries Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam have agreed to deepen cooperation to fight cross border cybercrime and telecommunications fraud. The agreement was reached at a ministerial level meeting held on Friday in Kunming in the Yunnan province of China.

Law enforcement agencies from the six nations held detailed discussions on how to strengthen joint action and respond to increasingly complex cybercrime networks operating across borders. The talks led to several important consensuses focused on tightening coordination and improving operational efficiency.

China’s Ministry of Public Security called the meeting a significant step forward in law enforcement collaboration among the participating countries. Representatives signed a joint document summarising the outcomes and shared commitments.

All countries expressed a strong resolve to work together against rising cyber threats. They agreed to conduct more multinational joint operations, create more regular communication systems, improve information sharing and continue the transfer or repatriation of people involved in cross border scams. The nations said they aim to raise the effectiveness of collective crackdowns to protect peace and stability in the region.

China has increased its cooperation with Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam in recent years. These efforts include creating structured coordination channels and carrying out successful joint actions. Several operations have disrupted online gambling and scam groups that moved across borders to avoid detection.

Officials from China’s Ministry of Public Security said the country will continue to expand international law enforcement partnerships. They reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting joint crackdowns, dismantling cybercrime and telecom fraud groups and pursuing suspects to protect people’s safety and property.
