Reliance Industries to establish one gigawatt AI data centre in Andhra Pradesh

Reliance Industries will set up a one gigawatt AI data centre in Andhra Pradesh, according to the state’s Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. The announcement adds to the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure across India, where global technology companies such as Google and Microsoft have already made major investments.

The Chief Minister did not reveal any financial details related to the project. Reliance has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Companies across the world are making significant investments to build new infrastructure to meet the sharp rise in demand for AI services. India has become an important growth market with nearly one billion internet users. Last month, Google committed to investing fifteen billion dollars over five years to build an AI data centre in Andhra Pradesh. It is Google’s largest investment in India to date. Microsoft and Amazon have also invested billions in developing data centres in the country.

The planned Reliance data centre will operate alongside the company’s existing gigawatt scale AI data centre in Jamnagar in Gujarat. Naidu said the two centres will work as twin facilities and will form one of Asia’s strongest AI infrastructure networks.

AI technologies require vast computing power, which is driving demand for specialised data centres that allow technology companies to connect thousands of chips in large clusters.

Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, includes Jio which is India’s largest telecom carrier, Reliance Retail, a major retail operator, Network eighteen which is a media group, and the Jamnagar facility which is India’s largest oil complex.
