Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing arrests four agents linked to Myanmar cyber scam hub

Organised cyber scams running from compounds in Southeast Asian countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam have increased in recent years. After diplomatic efforts, authorities raided the KK Park scam hub in Myawaddy in Myanmar. Workers at the hub, including several Indians, fled and crossed into Thailand. A total of four hundred and sixty five Indians were brought back to India in two phases on November six and ten. Thirty five of them were from Tamil Nadu.

Following the repatriation, the Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing launched an operation named Blue Triangle. The operation was led by Superintendent of Police Shahnaz and resulted in the identification and arrest of four agents from among the thirty five repatriates.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Manavalan who is thirty five years old, Rajkumar who is thirty six years old, Deepak Dona who is twenty seven years old, and Jovin Abishek Rajan who is twenty eight years old.

Additional Director General of Police, Cyber Crime Wing, Sandeep Mittal, said, “Our investigation revealed that these agents played a key role in establishing a cyber scam company named DIY involved in various cyber scams like fake investments, digital arrests, etc., at KK Park, in aid with the Malaysian agents.”

He added that the accused trafficked job seekers from Thanjavur, Cuddalore and Tiruvarur districts to these scam compounds by promising them work in information technology or typing roles. It has been found that they were responsible for trafficking about eighteen of the thirty one repatriated individuals.

He said that steps were in progress to trace the proceeds of crime linked to the arrested agents and to uncover other international links connected to the criminal group. The remaining repatriated individuals were counselled and warned about the risks of seeking overseas employment through illegal channels not registered with the Ministry of External Affairs.

To prevent repeat offences, they were also informed about the illegality of working inside a cyber scam compound while travelling on a tourist visa, he said.
