OpenAI has officially unveiled GPT-5.1, the latest update to its ChatGPT family, promising faster responses, advanced reasoning capabilities and a more personalized user experience. The release features two new models, GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking, designed to optimize AI performance for both speed and intelligence.

GPT-5.1 Instant and Thinking: Tailored AI for Every Task

The GPT-5.1 Instant model is engineered for rapid, natural conversations, ideal for everyday interactions. In contrast, GPT-5.1 Thinking handles more complex queries, providing detailed explanations and deeper solutions. Both models incorporate adaptive processing, automatically adjusting their approach based on the complexity of user prompts. This ensures instant responses for simple questions and thoughtful reasoning for challenging tasks.

Eight New Personality Modes Enhance User Experience

GPT-5.1 introduces eight customizable personality modes: Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy and Cynical. These modes allow users to tailor the AI’s tone, warmth, sharpness and even emoji usage. Changes are applied across all chats in real-time, giving users full control over their AI interaction style.

Improved Math, Coding, and Knowledge Skills

OpenAI reports significant improvements in GPT-5.1’s math and coding capabilities, making it competitive in contests like AIME 2025 and Codeforces. The Thinking model simplifies complex topics, delivering clear, easy-to-understand explanations without unnecessary jargon.

Availability for Subscribers and Users

Early access to GPT-5.1 begins this week for Pro, Plus, Go and Business subscribers, while free users will gain access shortly after. Enterprise and Education plans will enjoy a one-week preview. Older GPT-5 versions will remain available for three months through a dropdown menu, providing flexibility for users who wish to compare models.

OpenAI’s Vision: Intelligent and Enjoyable AI

Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, stated that GPT-5.1 “balances depth with personality,” addressing user feedback for an AI that is both smart and enjoyable to interact with. The update focuses on making conversations faster, more intelligent and highly personalized, reinforcing OpenAI’s commitment to creating AI that adapts to user needs.

With GPT-5.1, OpenAI delivers one of the most advanced ChatGPT experiences yet, offering a blend of speed, intelligence, and personality for users worldwide.
