NTR District Police launches Cyber Commandos to strengthen digital crime prevention

In a major step towards enhancing cybercrime prevention and digital investigation, NTR District Police Commissioner SV Rajashekhar Babu has launched a specialised training initiative to prepare police personnel with updated knowledge of cybercrimes and digital arrests.

As part of the programme, at least two officers from every police station within the Commissionerate will receive training in cybercrime handling, capacity building, and public awareness campaigns related to digital safety.

“We are handpicking young officers with engineering backgrounds and those interested in technology, and giving them training in cybersecurity and cybercrime-related aspects that we are facing in day-to-day life. These officers will be called ‘Cyber Commandos,’ and the team is going to be big in the coming days, serving as a one-stop solution to cybercrimes,” the Commissioner said.

A comprehensive workshop was also conducted as part of the initiative, with around 90 officers from various ranks participating. The sessions focused on cybercrime prevention, the concept of digital arrests, management of social media-related cases, and faster investigation processes.

The Police Commissioner emphasised the need for public awareness to prevent citizens from becoming victims of online fraud. “Leveraging technology effectively in policing could not only improve service delivery but also reduce the workload on officers. All the trained personnel will apply their learnings to resolve cyber-related cases efficiently within their jurisdictions,” he said.

The training sessions for the Cyber Commandos covered several key areas, including the use of the Cyber Citizen mobile application, operations of the 1930 call centre, coordination with the NCRP Portal and I4C, and promoting awareness through social media.

Rajashekhar Babu highlighted that nearly three lakh citizens have been connected through the Cyber Citizen app to assist in surveillance and reporting of cyber offences. “This app serves as a complete guide on how to avoid becoming cyber victims in all forms of cybercrimes, especially digital arrests,” he added.

He also warned citizens against falling for fake ‘digital arrest’ scams, reminding them that the police do not conduct arrests through WhatsApp or video calls.

Meanwhile, the State government has strengthened its cybercrime response by appointing a Superintendent of Police-rank officer, Krishna Prasanna, as DCP for the Cybercrimes Department. The move reflects the growing focus on building a dedicated and technologically capable team to tackle increasing cyber threats.
