Amazon lays off 660 employees in New York as CEO calls move a cultural reset

Amazon has laid off 660 corporate employees across nine offices in New York City as part of a larger restructuring effort that aims to remove fourteen thousand corporate roles worldwide. The layoffs, listed on the New York State WARN dashboard, took effect on November eight, two thousand twenty five. Impacted locations include offices on Seventh Avenue, Tenth Avenue and Thirty Fourth Street in Manhattan, in line with state rules requiring advance notice for mass job cuts.

The reductions follow Amazon’s announcement just weeks ago of its biggest corporate job cuts since the pandemic. Reports indicate that the Seattle based company may eventually eliminate up to thirty thousand corporate positions, which would be about nine percent of its global office workforce.

In an earlier blog post, Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience, said the restructuring aims to “reduce bureaucracy, remove layers, and shift resources to ensure we are investing in our biggest bets.” An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to a common publication that the layoffs are part of a company wide realignment meant to improve efficiency and align teams with long term goals. The company did not specify which departments were affected.

Addressing speculation about whether automation or financial pressure drove the decision, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said during the latest earnings call that the move was primarily about culture. “The announcement that we made a few days ago was not really financially driven, and it is not even really AI driven, not right now at least,” Jassy said. “It really, it is culture.”

He added that rapid expansion over several years created more people, teams, locations and business lines than before. “And when that happens, sometimes, without realizing it, you can weaken the ownership of the people that you have who are doing the actual work,” he said. “And it can lead to slowing you down.”

Amazon’s restructuring comes at a time when many major technology companies are adjusting their workforce after pandemic era growth. While several cite artificial intelligence and cost cutting as key reasons, Amazon’s leadership says this phase of layoffs is focused on restoring agility and strengthening accountability across the company.
