Google has unveiled Private AI Compute, a new cloud-based artificial intelligence platform designed to deliver the full power of its Gemini models while keeping user data completely private — even from Google itself. This marks a significant leap in the company’s efforts to combine advanced AI performance with strict privacy protections.
The new system allows devices to access high-performance AI capabilities from the cloud without compromising security. It uses a hardware-secured, sealed computing environment where all user data is encrypted and processed privately. Before any data leaves a user’s device, it undergoes remote attestation to confirm that it will only be handled within this trusted environment. According to Google, this ensures that no personal data is ever stored, shared, or used to train AI models.
Private AI Compute is already powering several new Pixel 10 features. The Magic Cue app now offers smarter, more context-aware suggestions, while the Recorder app can summarise transcriptions in multiple languages, enhancing usability and accessibility.
This innovation comes as major tech firms race to make AI both powerful and privacy-safe. Apple recently launched Private Cloud Compute in iOS 18, which processes sensitive Siri and device data through secure cloud systems. Meta, meanwhile, has been experimenting with federated learning and on-device processing to reduce dependency on centralized data storage.
Google’s new approach represents a broader shift in the tech industry — one focused on balancing the intelligence of large-scale AI with user trust and control. The company says Private AI Compute combines the scale and sophistication of cloud computing with the privacy standards of on-device processing, creating a model that could define the next generation of secure AI experiences.
By ensuring that even Google cannot access user data, this system sets a new benchmark for privacy-first AI technology. It positions Google at the forefront of a growing movement among tech giants to deliver personalized AI performance without compromising confidentiality.
