Google begins rolling out Gemini on Google TV Streamer, replacing Google Assistant

Google has started introducing its Gemini AI assistant to the Google TV Streamer, marking the beginning of its shift away from Google Assistant across its ecosystem. The company said the rollout will take place over the next few weeks for users aged eighteen and older.

With Gemini, users can give more natural voice commands while browsing for content. They can ask questions like “I like dramas but my wife likes comedies. What’s a movie we can watch together?” or get a quick recap by asking “What happened at the end of Outlander last season?” Gemini can also help users discover trending shows by answering queries such as “What’s the new hospital drama everyone’s talking about?”

Google says Gemini for TV is not limited to entertainment. Users can ask any type of question, similar to how they use Gemini on their phones. They can bring learning to the TV by asking Gemini to “Explain why volcanoes erupt to my third grader.” The assistant can also guide users through recipes or DIY tasks with support from video content on YouTube.

To use Gemini on the Google TV Streamer, users simply need to press the microphone button on their remote. The rollout follows Google’s earlier announcement that Gemini would be added to select TCL models and upcoming 2025 Hisense and TCL devices. Gemini is also available on a streaming device offered by a major retailer.

The update aligns with Google’s broader plan to replace Google Assistant with Gemini across its products. The company had shared at an event in January that Gemini would arrive on Google TV this year.
