Apple to expand iPhone satellite features beyond emergency use

Apple is reportedly working on expanding its satellite-based connectivity features for iPhone users, moving beyond the current emergency calling and messaging services. The upcoming suite of features aims to make iPhones more functional even without traditional mobile networks or internet connections.

According to a report, the new capabilities may include using Apple Maps offline via satellite, sending photos through Messages, and other tools that utilise direct satellite communication. These features are still in development and are expected to be offered free of charge initially, though users may need to pay telecom carriers for extended or premium support.

As per the report, Apple currently has no plans to enable phone or video calls, or web browsing via satellite. However, the company has internally discussed the possibility of launching its own satellite connectivity service. Concerns have been raised that such a move could turn Apple into a telecom carrier, though a partnership with a satellite communications provider like SpaceX remains a potential option for future paid connectivity.

Currently, Apple’s existing satellite features rely on Globalstar’s network, which the company has helped fund and upgrade to support future developments.

Apple’s growing investment in satellite-powered technologies highlights its long-term strategy to improve the reliability and usability of iPhones in areas with limited or no mobile coverage. Such advancements could make key functions accessible to users in remote or emergency situations without depending on conventional cellular networks.

The company recently concluded its fiscal 2025 with a record September-quarter revenue of $102.5 billion, marking an 8 per cent year-on-year increase, driven by strong iPhone and Services sales, particularly in markets like India.

Expected satellite-powered iPhone features:

  • Apple Maps via satellite
  • Photos in Messages via satellite
  • Satellite connectivity over 5G
  • Satellite API framework for third-party applications
  • Enhanced indoor satellite connectivity without the need for direct sky visibility

In 2026, Apple is also expected to roll out its much-awaited AI-powered revamp of Siri, which will reportedly use a custom version of Google’s Gemini model.
