Gemini powered voice navigation begins rolling out inside Google Maps in India

A new conversational experience inside Google Maps is becoming available to users in India as the company introduces deeper Gemini support. The update is designed to let people speak naturally while navigating, planning routes, adding stops, or discovering places along the way on both Android and iPhone.

The feature allows users to ask complex, connected questions in one flow. You can say something like “Find budget friendly vegan restaurants along my route, open now, with parking nearby” and then follow it with “add the second one as a stop.” Gemini keeps track of the context so there is no need to repeat earlier details.

Directions are also becoming easier to follow. Maps will now highlight clear visual cues and nearby structures for guidance. Instead of distance based prompts, you may hear instructions such as “Turn right after the red brick church” which can be particularly useful in crowded areas.

Users will also receive timely local suggestions. Gemini can surface ideas for coffee, electric vehicle chargers, or kid friendly stops near your route. These suggestions are supported by place details including hours, wait times, and popular dishes.

Later this month, the Lens feature built with Gemini will expand the experience even more. By tapping the camera icon and pointing at a storefront or building, users can ask why it is popular, what the atmosphere is like, or what items they should try. Gemini uses visual input combined with reviews and photos to respond.

To get started, users can say “Hey Google” during Maps navigation or tap the Gemini icon where it appears. Permissions may be required so Gemini can assist with tasks such as adding events from Calendar. You can make follow up requests like “avoid tolls” or “show parking near the venue” without starting a new search.

Reporting issues has also become simpler. If you see a problem on the road, you can say “there is an accident ahead” or “flooding on this road” to help Maps update routes more quickly.

The rollout in India has begun and will continue over the coming days. Some users will see the Gemini icon immediately, while others will receive it soon. This update reflects a broader effort to bring Gemini into everyday apps without needing special commands.
