Google expands Chrome’s autofill feature to include IDs and vehicle details

Google has rolled out a major update to its Chrome browser, extending the Autofill feature beyond basic details such as addresses, passwords, and payment information. The latest update now allows Chrome to automatically fill in additional fields, including passport numbers, driver’s licence details, and vehicle information such as licence plate numbers or VINs.

According to a company blog post, the new feature is being released globally in all languages, with plans to include support for even more data types in the coming months.

With the introduction of the “Enhanced autofill” option, users will be able to complete complex online forms with greater ease. For instance, when renting a car, Chrome can now automatically enter your name, driver’s licence number, and issuing state. Google stated that the updated system can better recognise and interpret forms with different layouts and formats, reducing errors and improving speed when filling out forms online.

On the privacy front, Google assured users that all data is saved only with consent and is encrypted for security. Before any stored information is used to autofill a form, Chrome will request confirmation to ensure users remain in control of their personal data. However, Google noted that enabling Enhanced Autofill allows Chrome to share the page’s URL and content with the company to help the system accurately identify form types.

How to enable Enhanced Autofill in Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome on your desktop.
  2. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  4. Choose Autofill and passwords from the sidebar.
  5. Click on Enhanced autofill.
  6. Turn on the toggle for “Chrome understands forms better and can autofill them faster for you.”

Once enabled, Chrome will automatically detect and complete complex forms more accurately, including those requiring identification or vehicle details. According to Google, this enhancement is designed to make filling out online forms more convenient and efficient, without compromising privacy or user control.
