Nikon has released firmware version 3.00 for the Z f full frame mirrorless camera, adding a new Film Grain feature and several usability upgrades. The Film Grain option allows photographers and videographers to create visuals that resemble traditional film photography.
It offers three grain size choices and six intensity levels, and each shot produces a unique grain pattern. This helps deliver a natural film like texture without repeating the same effect. The feature can also be used together with Nikon Imaging Recipes and Picture Controls for more creative styling.
The update improves the manual focusing experience through an option called Only during zoom for Focus peaking. With this setting, peaking indicators appear only when the image is magnified. This allows users to confirm sharpness while keeping the main composition clear when not zoomed in. A new Maximum aperture Lv setting also helps users identify the focus peak more accurately during manual adjustments.
For content creators, the firmware introduces new grid type options suited for social media framing. This includes a 4:3 ratio for still photography and a 9:16 ratio for vertical video. Nikon firmware update also supports smoother live streaming to HDMI devices and improves the monitor and viewfinder switching behavior to prevent accidental viewfinder activation when the vari angle display is open.
Other enhancements include added electronic shutter sound options for high speed shooting and pixel shift photography, support for recording videos in portrait orientation and easier registration of Imaging Recipes through Nikon Imaging Cloud.
Firmware version 3.00 is now available for download from the Nikon India website.
