Paytm introduces UPI payments for NRIs using international mobile numbers

Non Resident Indians can now make UPI payments in India using their international mobile numbers through the Paytm app. One97 Communications Ltd, the parent company of Paytm, has launched this new feature that allows NRIs to link their Non Resident External or Non Resident Ordinary bank accounts for seamless transactions without the need for an Indian SIM card.

The feature, currently in its beta phase, supports users from twelve countries including Singapore, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, France, and Malaysia.

With this update, NRIs can send money to Indian bank accounts, make online purchases on Indian apps and websites, transfer funds between their own accounts, and pay at stores by scanning UPI QR codes. All transactions can be made in Indian currency without any foreign exchange conversion fees or international gateway charges.

In a post on X, Paytm announced, “Hello NRIs! You can now use your international mobile number on the Paytm app for UPI payments with your NRE or NRO account.” The move supports the company’s goal of enhancing global financial connectivity and strengthening its reach among overseas Indians.

How NRIs can activate Paytm UPI for payments

To use the feature, NRIs must download the Paytm app and log in using their international mobile number. After verifying the number via SMS, they can link their NRE or NRO bank account. Payments can then be made by scanning QR codes or using the app for online and in store transactions across India.

In addition to this new feature, Paytm also offers UPI One World, a digital wallet solution that allows foreign users and NRIs to make secure payments in India without requiring a local bank account.

Moreover, UPI Global Acceptance enables Indian users and NRIs to scan QR codes and pay at selected international merchant locations, making cross border payments more convenient.

Paytm users can also track balances across multiple linked accounts, hide payments, analyze spending, and download detailed UPI statements in PDF or Excel format for easy management.
