OpenAI has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, the company behind Sky, an AI-powered natural language interface for Apple Macs. The acquisition brings Sky’s deep macOS integration and product expertise into ChatGPT, with all members of the Sky team joining OpenAI.
Sky is an unreleased AI interface designed to understand the user’s screen and perform contextual tasks such as writing, planning, and coding directly within active windows. The technology, previewed earlier this year, focuses on natural interaction and automation, continuing the team’s legacy from the Workflow app, which Apple acquired in 2017 and transformed into Shortcuts.
Nick Turley, VP and Head of ChatGPT, said, “We’re building a future where ChatGPT doesn’t just respond to your prompts — it helps you get things done. Sky’s deep integration with the Mac accelerates our vision of bringing AI directly into the tools people use every day.”
Co-founder and CEO of Software Applications Incorporated, Ari Weinstein, added, “With LLMs, we can finally put the pieces together. That’s why we built Sky, an AI experience that floats over your desktop to help you think and create. We’re thrilled to join OpenAI to bring that vision to hundreds of millions of people.”
Sky was founded in 2023 by Ari Weinstein and Conrad Kramer, along with Kim Beverett, a former senior Apple product manager who worked on Safari, Messages, FaceTime, and SharePlay. Weinstein and Kramer previously created the Workflow app, which became the foundation for Apple Shortcuts. Although Sky was never publicly released, it functioned as a Mac-native AI assistant capable of system-level actions through natural language.
The acquisition strengthens OpenAI’s desktop ambitions, coming shortly after the launch of ChatGPT Atlas, its AI-powered web browser. With Atlas managing web tasks and Sky extending AI to desktop workflows, OpenAI aims to position ChatGPT as a multi-environment assistant capable of handling research, writing, and system-level actions seamlessly.
OpenAI plans to integrate Sky’s technology into ChatGPT in the coming months, aiming to create a next-generation AI experience for macOS users.
