Google introduces new privacy and security tools to enhance account recovery

Google has rolled out a set of privacy and security updates aimed at improving account recovery and safeguarding users across Android and Google services. The new features include recovery contacts, sign-in with mobile numbers, and enhanced spam protection in Google Messages.

Safer links in Google Messages

Google Messages will now warn users before they click on suspicious links that could lead to phishing or malicious sites. Messages flagged as spam display a warning and block access unless the user confirms it is safe. The global rollout aims to protect users from data theft and online scams through text messages.

Key Verifier for encrypted chats

A new Key Verifier tool adds an extra layer of security for end-to-end encrypted conversations. Users can verify a chat’s authenticity by scanning a QR code with a trusted contact. This ensures messages are not intercepted and is available on devices running Android 10 and above.

Account recovery tools

Recovery contacts now allow users to add trusted friends or family who can help verify their identity if they are locked out of their Google Account due to a lost device, forgotten password, or security breach. Contacts receive a short verification code valid for 15 minutes. Users can add up to ten recovery contacts, each of whom must approve the request. A contact cannot be reused for another recovery attempt for seven days.

Sign-in with phone number

Google is also introducing sign-in with mobile number, enabling users to recover access without relying on passwords or secondary emails. Users can identify all accounts linked to their phone number and verify ownership using their previous device’s screen lock or pattern. This feature is gradually expanding worldwide.

Scam awareness and education

In addition to technical safeguards, Google is expanding public education initiatives to help users recognise and avoid fraud. Programs like the Be Scam Ready interactive game and collaborations with cybersecurity organisations aim to promote safer digital habits for all age groups.

These updates reflect Google’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security and empower users to stay safe online amid growing global concerns about digital scams.
