Airtel and IBM have announced a strategic partnership to reshape India’s cloud landscape by combining Airtel Cloud’s telecom-grade reliability and strong data residency framework with IBM’s advanced AI-ready Power systems and cloud expertise. The collaboration is designed to support enterprises across regulated sectors such as banking and healthcare by enabling scalable AI workloads and seamless interoperability across on-premise, cloud, multi-cloud, and edge environments.
Gopal Vittal, Airtel’s Vice Chairman and Managing Director, said the partnership would significantly strengthen the company’s cloud capabilities. “With the IBM partnership, we are adding substantial capabilities to our Cloud platform to address the unique needs of several industries that require migration from IBM Power Systems and allow for AI readiness,” he stated.
As part of this initiative, Airtel is expanding its cloud footprint by increasing its availability zones from four to ten and launching two new Multizone Regions in Mumbai and Chennai. These expansions aim to enhance data security, operational resilience, and service continuity for enterprise customers.
The partnership will also integrate IBM’s watsonx AI inference software and Red Hat OpenShift AI to deliver advanced generative AI solutions and hybrid cloud infrastructure tailored to the specific needs of Indian enterprises.
By combining Airtel’s robust cloud network with IBM’s deep AI and cloud expertise, the collaboration seeks to accelerate AI adoption in India while maintaining compliance with strict data residency and privacy requirements. The alliance marks a major step toward creating a scalable, intelligent, and secure cloud ecosystem that supports India’s growing digital transformation journey.
