Amazon is reportedly preparing to lay off about 15 per cent of its human resources staff as part of a major restructuring effort focused on artificial intelligence and cloud operations, according to a report by a common news outlet quoting sources familiar with the matter.
The restructuring will affect the company’s People eXperience and Technology (PXT) team, which includes over 10,000 employees worldwide. The team handles recruitment, technology, and other HR functions. However, the report did not specify how many employees would be impacted or when the layoffs would begin.
Some other parts of Amazon’s consumer business may also face job reductions, the report said.
Earlier this year, Amazon laid off employees from its consumer devices unit, Wondery podcast division, and Amazon Web Services. The company has reportedly set aside over 100 billion dollars for capital investments in AI and cloud infrastructure in 2025, showing its strong focus on technology-driven transformation.
The move reflects Amazon’s shift towards greater automation and efficiency as AI becomes central to its operations. CEO Andy Jassy has repeatedly highlighted the role of AI in shaping the company’s future and driving productivity.
Jassy had earlier led the company’s largest round of layoffs between late 2022 and 2023, when around 27,000 corporate jobs were cut. Many other global firms also reduced their workforce during that period due to the pandemic’s impact.
In an internal email shared on the company’s official blog, Jassy wrote, “Those who embrace this change, become conversant in AI, help us build and improve our AI capabilities internally and deliver for customers, will be well-positioned to have high impact and help us reinvent the company.”
He also acknowledged that not all employees would be retained as the company advances with its AI-focused changes. “We expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company,” Jassy added.
