Google integrates Gemini Nano Banana model to enable AI image creation and editing in Search and Lens

Google is taking another major leap in generative AI by embedding image creation and editing tools directly into its core apps. The company has rolled out new AI-powered features in Google Search and Google Lens using its Gemini Nano Banana model, allowing users to generate, edit, and transform visuals without switching to third-party platforms.

The latest update, powered by the Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model, merges creativity and utility into a single experience within Google’s ecosystem. A new ‘Create Images’ option has been introduced under Google Search’s AI Mode, featuring a plus icon in the bottom-left corner of the prompt bar. This replaces the previous carousel of prompts with a cleaner list view. By selecting the icon, users can access three options — Gallery, Camera, and Create Images — the last marked with a playful banana emoji.

When users tap ‘Create Images’, they can describe an idea or upload an image for AI-powered editing. The tool then generates visuals that can be downloaded or shared instantly. Each result includes a subtle Gemini spark watermark in the bottom-right corner, ensuring transparency by identifying the image as AI-generated content.

Google Lens has also received a major update with a new ‘Create’ tab, expanding its functionality beyond object detection and text recognition. This feature, also represented by the banana emoji, allows users to capture selfies or photos and apply AI-driven edits in real time. The interface opens the front-facing camera by default and lets users modify backgrounds, styles, and artistic effects instantly. The redesigned layout accommodates more visual filters and creative tools side by side for a smoother experience.

For now, the new Gemini-powered tools are gradually rolling out to Android devices in the United States under Google’s AI Mode Search Lab. The company plans to expand access globally in stages and introduce support for additional languages soon.

This rollout highlights Google’s broader mission to make generative AI a natural part of daily digital interactions by integrating Search, Lens, and Gemini into one cohesive ecosystem.
