Australia’s largest airline, Qantas Airways, has confirmed that customer data has been released by cybercriminals following a significant breach earlier this year. The attack, which occurred in early July, involved the theft of customer information through a third-party platform and is considered one of the country’s largest cyber breaches in recent years.
“With the help of specialist cyber security experts, we are investigating what data was part of the release,” Qantas stated on Sunday, October 12. The airline also confirmed that an ongoing injunction is in place “to prevent the stolen data being accessed, viewed, released, used, transmitted or published by anyone, including third parties.”
During the July incident, sensitive information, including phone numbers, birth dates, and home addresses, was stolen for more than one million customers. An additional four million customers had their names and email addresses compromised. The data release was carried out by the hacker collective Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters after a ransom deadline set by the group was not met.
This cyberattack is the most high-profile in Australia since similar data breaches affected a major telecommunications company and a leading health insurer in 2022, which prompted the introduction of mandatory cyber resilience laws across the country. Qantas continues to work with cybersecurity specialists to mitigate risks and protect affected customers.
The airline emphasized that it is taking all necessary measures to prevent further exposure of customer information while investigating the full extent of the breach.
