Gurugram launches India’s first QR code kiosk for traffic fines

Gurugram has achieved a national first by introducing a QR code based kiosk for the payment of traffic fines. This significant step towards digital governance makes the process of settling traffic challans much simpler and faster using contactless digital technology.

The project is a joint effort between the Gurugram Police and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority, established under a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. The first kiosk was unveiled at Ambience Mall on Saturday by the Deputy Commissioner of Police for Traffic.

How the Kiosk Works

The smart kiosk allows drivers to easily check and pay any outstanding fines. Motorists simply need to enter their vehicle registration number. The machine then generates a QR code, which citizens can scan to complete the digital transaction instantly.

However, the system cannot be used to settle fines that are currently pending before a court or those that have been overdue for more than ninety days.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police for Traffic stated, “For the first time in India, traffic challans can be paid through QR based kiosks. This will not only ease the workload of traffic police but will also provide a faster and transparent digital option for citizens.”

Safety and Expansion

The installation at Ambience Mall is the pilot phase. Based on its success, similar kiosks are planned for high foot traffic locations across Gurugram, including metro stations and marketplaces. Officials note the system enhances transparency and efficiency, removing the need for citizens to visit police stations for routine payments.

For added public safety, each kiosk includes beacon lights for visibility and a video based emergency call system. This system is linked directly to the Dial 112 emergency line and the Police Commissioner’s Control Room. Gurugram citizens can connect via a one touch video call to report emergencies or request immediate help. The system operates twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

Gurugram Police believe this move is a major leap towards smart traffic management under the Smart City Mission. Future plans include integrating the kiosks with AI powered traffic analytics, facial recognition, and real time data sharing to further enhance city surveillance and safety.

This initiative is set to reduce manual workload, improve compliance, and strengthen data driven policing in the city.
