The Cybercrime Police of Hyderabad has announced a massive crackdown on online fraud, resulting in significant arrests and the recovery of funds for victims. During the month of September, the police arrested 59 cyber fraudsters from eight states across India and successfully refunded Rs 86.64 lakh to the victims.
The police force received 320 complaints through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. Following these reports, 222 First Information Reports were registered at the Cybercrime Police Station, with another 106 registered at the Zonal Cyber Cells of the City Police.
The arrested individuals were involved in 257 cases nationwide, including 74 cases located within Telangana. The police identified 28 arrests related to investment fraud, six for digital arrest fraud, four for part time investment scams, four for credit card fraud, three for movie piracy, and two for matrimonial fraud.
The police seized 43 mobile phones, four laptops, 23 ATM or debit cards, and 21 SIM cards. The recovered amount included large sums traced back to investment fraud (Rs 58.47 lakh), impersonation fraud (Rs 13 lakh), and trading fraud (Rs 12.43 lakh).
Piracy and Digital Arrest Cases
In a major development, the Cybercrime Police dismantled a large movie piracy network, arresting five accused from Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. The operation followed a complaint from the Anti Video Piracy Cell of the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce regarding the illegal online circulation of the Telugu films ‘Single’ and ‘Hit’ on their release day.
The Cybercrime Police also arrested two people from Maharashtra in connection with a digital arrest scam that led to the victim’s death. The victim, a retired CSRMO, suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away on September 8. She was targeted by fraudsters impersonating Bangalore Police and other agencies who falsely accused her of human trafficking.
They used fake documents and extorted Rs 6,60,543 from her pension account. The ongoing threats and psychological abuse caused her immense mental agony, which resulted in her cardiac arrest. The fraudsters continued to send calls and messages even after her death.
