OpenAI and Broadcom have announced a strategic collaboration to co-develop 10 gigawatts of custom AI accelerators and network systems. Under this partnership, OpenAI will design the accelerators, while Broadcom will provide Ethernet and connectivity solutions. The deployment will begin in the second half of 2026 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2029 across OpenAI’s facilities and partner data centres.
The collaboration aims to build the advanced infrastructure required to meet the rapidly increasing global demand for artificial intelligence.
Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, said, “Partnering with Broadcom is a critical step in building the infrastructure needed to unlock AI’s potential and deliver real benefits for people and businesses. Developing our own accelerators adds to the broader ecosystem of partners all building the capacity required to push the frontier of AI and provide benefits to all humanity.”
Hock Tan, President and CEO of Broadcom, described the collaboration as a pivotal moment in the pursuit of artificial general intelligence, acknowledging OpenAI’s continued leadership since the introduction of ChatGPT.
Greg Brockman, co-founder and President of OpenAI, added that building custom chips allows the company to embed insights from frontier models directly into hardware, enabling new levels of capability and intelligence.
Charlie Kawwas of Broadcom also highlighted that combining custom accelerators with Ethernet networking solutions establishes new industry standards for scalable and power-efficient AI infrastructure.
This partnership represents a major milestone in advancing AI hardware innovation and scaling next-generation AI systems globally.
