Microsoft tests cloud-first save feature in Word to compete with Google Docs

Microsoft is testing a new feature in Word that automatically saves new documents to the cloud, moving it closer to Google Docs. The feature, called “cloud-first save,” is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders and aims to make OneDrive the default workspace for users.

Previously, Word would open new documents unsaved on a PC and ask if users wanted to enable OneDrive’s autosave. The new system reverses this, saving fresh files to OneDrive by default. This ensures backup, version history, and syncing happen automatically. Existing local documents will not be affected by the change.

The update allows Word to function more like Google Docs, where cloud saving is standard. For Microsoft, it also strengthens integration with OneDrive and Copilot, making documents accessible across devices instantly. Additionally, it provides Microsoft with data on user behaviour, opt-outs, and support issues, which could guide how widely cloud-first saving is introduced in Windows.

While convenient, automatic cloud storage could raise privacy and compliance concerns, especially for sensitive material. Accidentally saving private drafts or contracts to the cloud may create security risks depending on workplace rules. Microsoft says users can still opt out by selecting a local folder when saving or adjusting default paths in Word settings.

Though still in testing, the cloud-first save initiative aligns with Microsoft’s strategy of creating always-connected apps. Backup, sharing, and AI features will work seamlessly in the background, making Word feel less like a local program and more like a cloud-native workspace for most users.
