World’s first global circumnavigation by autonomous robotic submarine launched

A robotic submarine is set to embark on the world’s first global circumnavigation. Named Redwing, the autonomous underwater glider was launched from Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. The project, called the Sentinel Mission, is being led by Teledyne Marine in collaboration with Rutgers University, New Brunswick, with support from organizations including NOAA, the UN Ocean Decade, and the Marine Technology Society.

Redwing is a next-generation Slocum Sentinel Glider designed for ultra-long endurance ocean monitoring. The autonomous vehicle can operate for over a year, submerge up to 1,000 meters below the ocean surface, and travel vast distances while collecting oceanographic data. Once on the surface, it transmits data to a satellite every 12 hours.

The glider has greater internal space for sensors and hardware, allowing up to eight sensors to operate simultaneously. It also has multiple points for external hardware integration, making it capable of performing diverse oceanographic missions and supporting global marine research, conservation, and maritime security.

The mission follows the route of explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s historic 1519-1522 circumnavigation. Redwing will visit Gran Canaria off north-western Africa, Cape Town in South Africa, Western Australia, New Zealand, the Falkland Islands, and possibly Brazil, before returning to Cape Cod, covering around 73,000 kilometres.

The mission demonstrates cutting-edge oceanographic technology and is expected to significantly enhance the collection and analysis of global marine data. Scott Glenn, one of the project’s scientific leads from Rutgers University, said, “Data is transmitted by Redwing once every 12 hours.”

The global oceanographic community is invited to Woods Hole this fall for the Slocum Glider User’s Conference. The event will feature the official launch of the Sentinel Mission on October 10, highlighting Redwing’s historic autonomous circumnavigation.
