Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Thursday that he has taken up advisory roles with US technology company Microsoft and artificial intelligence startup Anthropic.
Sunak, who stepped down as the leader of the Conservative Party after its defeat in the general election last July, continues to serve as a member of the British Parliament.
In a LinkedIn post, Sunak shared that all proceeds from his new roles will be donated to The Richmond Project, a charitable initiative he founded with his wife Akshata Murty.
Anthropic, which is backed by major investors including Amazon and Google, stated that Sunak’s part-time, internally focused advisory role fully complies with the rules set by the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACOBA). The committee regulates new professional engagements for former ministers and senior civil servants.
According to the company, Sunak will advise on strategy, macroeconomic developments, and global geopolitical trends. His role will not involve any UK-specific policy work, and he is not permitted to contact UK government officials on behalf of Anthropic.
At Microsoft, Sunak will offer strategic insights on global economic and geopolitical matters. As per a letter from ACOBA’s interim chair Isabel Doverty, he is expected to speak at the company’s annual summit. The letter also clarified that Sunak will not be involved in advising on UK policy issues.
Under the committee’s conditions, Sunak is prohibited from lobbying for Microsoft or using privileged information obtained during his time in office for two years following his departure from ministerial duties.
The technology company has not yet issued an official statement on the appointment.
This announcement follows Sunak’s return to Goldman Sachs in an advisory capacity earlier this year. Before entering politics, he worked at the Wall Street bank as an analyst in the early 2000s and later joined several hedge funds.
