How Zaha Hadid architects designed the Rs 19,650 crore Navi Mumbai Airport

The newly inaugurated Navi Mumbai International Airport stands as a landmark project in India’s infrastructure landscape, developed at a cost of Rs 19,650 crore. The airport is led by Adani Airports Holdings and designed by the acclaimed Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), reflecting a blend of advanced engineering and cultural symbolism.

ZHA’s design for the terminal draws inspiration from India’s national flower, the lotus. The terminal features a steel and glass roof that appears to float, supported by 12 petal-shaped columns and 17 mega-columns. These columns are engineered to withstand seismic activity and strong winds, serving both structural and symbolic roles. The design captures a fluid and futuristic style while maintaining a distinctly Indian identity, positioning the terminal as both a functional hub and an architectural icon.

The airport aims to ease congestion at Mumbai’s current airport and set new standards in capacity and design. The first phase includes a single 3,700-metre runway and a terminal that can manage around 20 million passengers annually. Future expansions will increase capacity to between 60 and 90 million passengers per year, with plans for up to four terminals and two parallel runways.

Passenger convenience is central to the terminal’s layout, which features 88 check-in counters divided among three zones named Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie. Initially, four gates will be operational with flexibility for future growth. The design prioritises natural daylight, clear sightlines, and easy navigation through open concourses, travelators, food courts, and retail spaces.

Located in Ulwe, 37 kilometres from South Mumbai, the airport sits on a 1,160-hectare site planned as a multi-modal transport hub. Integrated road and rail access, upgraded highways, rail shuttles, and proposed coastal road links aim to improve connectivity between Navi Mumbai and the existing Mumbai airport.

The project began under a previous partnership before transitioning to Adani Airports Holdings, with construction progressing in phases to accommodate land acquisition, resettlement, and operational readiness. The Navi Mumbai International Airport represents a new era in Indian airport design by combining technology, passenger comfort, and cultural symbolism. The lotus-inspired terminal embodies renewal and growth, reflecting the dynamic nature of the city it serves.
