Microsoft partners with Harvard to enhance Copilot’s healthcare responses, reducing OpenAI reliance

Microsoft is joining hands with Harvard Medical School to strengthen its Copilot AI assistant with trusted health information, according to a report on Wednesday. The move is seen as part of Microsoft’s wider strategy to lessen its dependence on OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT.

The upcoming Copilot update, expected to roll out as early as this month, will integrate medical content from Harvard Health Publishing to help the AI provide reliable and accurate answers to health-related questions. Microsoft will reportedly pay Harvard a licensing fee for the use of its content.

Dominic King, vice president of health at Microsoft AI, told a publication that the company aims to make Copilot’s health responses more consistent with the kind of information one would receive from a healthcare professional.

While Harvard has not yet issued a statement on the partnership, Microsoft has declined to comment on the report.

Until now, Microsoft’s Copilot has largely relied on OpenAI’s models across its suite of applications, including Word and Outlook. However, the tech giant has begun working with other AI providers, such as Anthropic, which develops the Claude model, while also building its own in-house AI systems to diversify its technology base.

This collaboration marks another step in Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to expand Copilot’s capabilities and ensure that its answers in sensitive domains like healthcare are backed by credible and authoritative sources.
