Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary and CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, has emphasised the need for India to develop its own foundational artificial intelligence models to achieve genuine technological independence and leadership.
He stated that while India currently depends on AI tools developed abroad, the country must create its own voice-first, non-English large language models and sector-focused solutions to meet local needs in areas such as fintech, agriculture, healthcare, and public services.
Outlining the goals of the IndiaAI Mission, Singh said the initiative aims to build at least five indigenous foundational models and develop one hundred strategic use cases by 2026. He highlighted that the mission will provide strong government support to startups and public infrastructure, helping to democratise AI access, particularly for India’s linguistically diverse communities.
Singh called for close collaboration among the government, industry, and academia to accelerate innovation. He added that India should not only consume but also “design, scale and export” its AI capabilities to make a global impact.
Discussing the nation’s approach to AI governance, Singh explained that India’s regulatory framework focuses on preventing harm rather than restricting innovation. The strategy ensures flexibility across sectors and promotes the ethical and responsible use of AI to empower citizens.
This balanced approach positions India as a proactive contributor to the global AI ecosystem, committed to building trustworthy, inclusive, and locally relevant technologies that reflect the nation’s unique cultural and linguistic diversity.
