Paytm’s Vijay Shekhar Sharma calls for India’s self-reliance in artificial intelligence

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder and CEO of Paytm, has urged India to achieve independence in artificial intelligence by developing its own technologies rather than relying on foreign platforms. Speaking at the Global Fintech Fest, he announced that Paytm will soon introduce a new range of AI-driven services under a fresh brand identity, separate from its current fintech business.

“For India, the sovereignty of AI is equal to virginity in a way. India should not give in to the sovereignty of AI to the foreign world at all. It is my belief that we as a country are capable and will build it,” Sharma said, expressing concern over the limited AI innovation happening within the country.

He pointed out India’s continued dependence on American technology, including operating systems, cloud networks, and mobile platforms, while praising China’s self-reliant strategy, where both government and private players have built indigenous systems. Sharma said his vision for AI aligns with India’s larger goal of becoming a technologically self-sufficient nation.

Clarifying misconceptions about Paytm’s role in the 2016 demonetisation, Sharma stated, “In November 2016, when something happened, people felt we inspired it. But, if we had such heft, then we wouldn’t be suffering the way we are today.”

He also emphasised the importance of autonomy for startup founders in public market decisions. Sharma said that founders should have the authority to determine their IPO pricing, stressing that leadership independence is essential for sustainable growth and innovation.

With his renewed focus on AI, Sharma envisions a future where India not only consumes global technologies but also creates its own, strengthening its position in the evolving digital world.
