Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has announced its plans to open its first office in India, targeting Bengaluru as its new location by early 2026. The Amazon backed firm, currently valued at 183 billion dollars, said this will be its second office in Asia, following Tokyo in Japan.
The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Dario Amodei, is in India this week to meet public officials and enterprise partners, according to a company statement.
Anthropic’s entry into India comes at a time when the use of AI is increasing rapidly across the country. A recent report from a global consulting firm revealed that more than 90 percent of Indian workers are already using AI tools, the highest rate of adoption worldwide.
In a press release, Amodei stated, “India is compelling because of the scale of its technical talent and the commitment from the Indian government to ensure the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all areas of society, not just concentrated pockets.”
Anthropic said its focus in India will be on deploying AI for “social impact” in sectors such as education and healthcare. The company also aims to support important industries by forming strategic partnerships.
Claude, Anthropic’s main AI product and a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, will soon feature “enhanced performance” in Hindi and nearly a dozen other languages spoken in India. The company reported that India is currently the second largest market for Claude, after the United States.
The expansion is part of Anthropic’s wider international growth plan, as it aims to increase its global workforce and attract more enterprise customers.
Meanwhile, OpenAI has also accelerated its presence in India. It recently introduced a low cost subscription model for ChatGPT and is reportedly planning to open its own office in the country.
Anthropic still has significant ground to cover in India. In August, Claude saw 118 thousand downloads in the country, compared to 10.3 million downloads for ChatGPT and 6.4 million for Perplexity, according to data from a market analytics firm.
