BMC Demolishes 245 Slum Homes to Make Way for New Road in Malad

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has begun demolishing 357 slum structures in Malad West to make way for a new 18.3-meter-wide road, aimed at improving east-west connectivity and easing traffic congestion in the area.

The demolition is taking place in Valnai near the Mith Chowky metro junction under the civic body’s bottleneck policy, which focuses on removing narrow choke points to improve traffic flow. So far, 245 of the targeted 357 structures have been cleared to construct the long-planned Development Plan road along Shankar Lane.

Currently, commuters in Malad rely heavily on the Malad subway and Datta Mandir Road to reach the Western Express Highway. These routes often face heavy congestion. The new Shankar Lane road will provide a parallel route to Marve Road, connecting S V Road and Link Road with the WEH, reducing traffic pressure on existing roads.

Kundan Valvi, assistant municipal commissioner of P North ward, said, “The road-widening work is being executed in three phases. We have already completed the first two phases and the third one is underway.”

The first two phases covered a 200-meter stretch from Adarsh Lane to Gautam Buddha Road, where over 100 slum structures were demolished. Phase three, extending from Gautam Buddha Road to Link Road, involves the removal of another 145 structures.

Of the 357 structures, 293 were residential and 53 commercial. For the first two phases, 64 residents were relocated to permanent transit housing in Sairaj Guriyapada building, a ten-minute drive from their original homes, in July.

Once completed, Shankar Lane is expected to significantly reduce congestion on the Malad subway and Marve Road, improving commuting efficiency for residents of the western suburbs. A missing 550-meter link extending Shankar Lane to New Link Road will also provide additional access from Malvani, Jankalyan Nagar, and Lalji Pada to the Western Express Highway.

The new DP road is set to complete a critical missing link in the city’s road network and offer a smoother, faster connection for east-west travel in Malad.
