PhonePe Payment Gateway has joined hands with RuPay and JioHotstar to launch a new UPI AutoPay feature backed by RuPay Credit Cards, aimed at making subscription payments faster, easier, and more reliable. The feature was officially unveiled at the Global Fintech Fest 2025.
The new initiative allows users to set up and manage subscription payments through UPI using their RuPay Credit Cards instead of linking recurring mandates to their bank accounts. This approach helps prevent payment failures due to insufficient balances, ensuring uninterrupted access to subscription-based platforms such as JioHotstar.
For merchants, the integration is expected to reduce customer drop-offs and improve transaction success rates. PhonePe’s Subscription IQ platform supports various recurring payment methods including UPI AutoPay, eNACH, and card-based billing, allowing businesses to manage multiple payment modes through a single interface.
Ankit Gaur, Head of Payment Gateway and Online Merchants at PhonePe, said the goal of the initiative is to make recurring payments “simple for users and reliable for businesses,” while offering subscribers the flexibility to cancel anytime.
A spokesperson from JioHotstar added that the partnership will enhance the platform’s ability to deliver seamless entertainment by ensuring consistent and reliable subscription renewals.
PhonePe also confirmed that the UPI AutoPay feature will soon be rolled out to more businesses through its Subscription Suite, supporting wider adoption of UPI-based recurring payments across India.
Alongside this announcement, PhonePe unveiled SmartPOD, a new hybrid device that combines the features of a SmartSpeaker and a Point-of-Sale terminal.
Designed and manufactured in India, SmartPOD enables small merchants to accept both UPI and card payments—including Mastercard, Visa, RuPay, and American Express—through NFC tap and chip-based transactions. The device comes equipped with dual displays, keypad-based PIN entry, e-charge slips, and audio confirmations for UPI payments.
According to PhonePe, SmartPOD aims to help small businesses accept a wider range of payments in a cost-effective and efficient way, further advancing India’s digital payments ecosystem.
