World Space Week 2025 Celebrates the Vision of Living Beyond Earth

The concept of making a home in space is moving rapidly from imagination to reality, and that vision is at the core of this year’s World Space Week (WSW). Celebrated globally from October 4 to October 10, the 2025 edition carries the theme “Living in Space.”

First established by the United Nations in 1999, World Space Week has grown into the largest annual space celebration on Earth, marked by thousands of events across more than 90 countries. The space week event highlights key developments in space science and technology while commemorating two major milestones in human history: the launch of Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957, and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty on October 10, 1967.

These anniversaries serve as reminders of how far humanity has come in its space journey and as inspiration for what lies ahead — a future where humans may live and work beyond Earth, on the Moon or Mars. “Ten people live in space today, but this number will grow,” said Dennis Stone, President of the World Space Week Association. “With new space stations and increasing benefits from research in microgravity, the population in orbit will keep rising, and eventually people will live and work on the Moon and Mars.”

This year’s theme focuses on what it truly means to create a sustainable human presence in space. “Living in Space” is not only about building spacecraft or stations, but also about overcoming the many challenges of making space habitable. These include designing advanced life support systems, protecting against radiation, and maintaining physical and mental health during long missions.

Throughout the week, schools, universities, space agencies, and community organisations are hosting more than 2,600 events worldwide. Activities range from interactive workshops, art contests, and online discussions to major exhibitions such as the Space Artwork Mosaic in London and NASA’s “Living on the Moon” online forum. Educational initiatives like Crayola’s space learning resources are also engaging younger audiences.

World Space Week 2025 aims to inspire people of all ages to imagine the technologies, innovations, and lifestyles that could make living off Earth a reality, while motivating the next generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers who may one day call space home.
