Equinix Launches $69 Million Data Centre in Chennai to Boost AI and Digital Growth

Tamil Nadu is rapidly becoming a centre for innovation, research, and AI investments, with Chennai leading the way. The launch of Equinix’s first International Business Exchange data centre in Chennai, named CN1, marks a major step forward in India’s digital transformation and the expansion of its AI ecosystem. Manoj Paul, Managing Director of Equinix India, said the project strengthens India’s digital backbone and highlights Tamil Nadu’s position as a growing hub for technology.

Developed with an initial investment of $69 million, CN1 is designed for 99.999 per cent uptime and liquid cooling readiness. It also provides low latency access due to its proximity to submarine cable landing sites. Paul explained that the facility enables enterprises to create secure hybrid multicloud infrastructures with direct connections to leading cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud. Equinix data centre also integrates renewable energy sources including solar and wind to support sustainable AI workloads.

Equinix stated that CN1 goes beyond traditional colocation by offering AI-ready infrastructure, strong global interconnection, and a focus on sustainability. “By combining AI-ready infrastructure, global-scale interconnection, and sustainability leadership, CN1 far surpasses traditional colocation facilities,” Paul said.

Equinix’s expansion aligns with India’s ambition to become a leader in advanced technologies such as AI, quantum computing, blockchain, and edge computing. With this development, Chennai is set to play a vital role as a key node in the country’s future digital infrastructure.
