OpenAI has introduced Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, allowing users to search, select, and buy products directly within the chat window without moving to external websites.
The feature is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol, developed with global fintech company Stripe. This protocol enables AI agents, businesses, and users to complete purchases seamlessly inside ChatGPT while merchants continue to handle shipping and customer support.
The process is straightforward. Users can ask ChatGPT to look for products online, choose an item, and tap the Buy button. They can then confirm their order and provide details within the same conversation. OpenAI has stressed that search results will remain fair and unbiased, saying, “there will be no preferential listings.”
At present, Instant Checkout is available only in the United States. It currently supports Etsy merchants, with Shopify integration expected soon. Once connected with Shopify, the feature could reach over a million merchants globally. Importantly, Instant Checkout is available to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free plan.
OpenAI clarified that customers will not be charged extra fees for using the feature. Instead, participating merchants will pay a small fee to access the protocol, while product prices will remain the same.
Future updates will include support for multi item carts, enabling users to buy several products in one transaction. OpenAI also plans to expand the feature to more regions and merchants. To encourage adoption, the company has made the Agentic Commerce Protocol open source, allowing developers and businesses worldwide to integrate it.
The launch of Instant Checkout follows the recent rollout of ChatGPT Pulse, a feature that collects updates overnight and delivers tailored insights to users the next morning. Together, these developments highlight OpenAI’s vision of making ChatGPT a tool for everyday convenience, from online shopping to personalised updates.
