Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal on Monday announced the rollout of a new feature called ‘Healthy Mode’ on the food delivery platform, designed to make it easier for users to choose healthier meals.
“For years, there’s been something about Zomato that made me uneasy. We made eating out and ordering in easier than ever, but we never really helped people truly eat better. Yes, you could find a salad or a smoothie bowl, but the truth is, if you wanted to eat genuinely nourishing food, Zomato didn’t make it easy,” Goyal wrote in a post on X.
He added, “That weighed on me, because when we say our mission is ‘better food for more people’, the ‘better’ has to mean something deeper. Today, we’ve taken one of the biggest steps in fixing that blind spot. We’re launching Healthy Mode on Zomato.”
Addressing Health Concerns
The launch comes amid rising concerns about India’s fast-food culture. Experts have warned that ultra-processed meals high in sugar and palm oil may damage public health, while doctors point to junk food addiction fuelled by cheap and convenient options.
Goyal explained that every dish under Healthy Mode now carries a ‘Healthy Score’, ranging from ‘Low to Super’, based on protein, complex carbohydrates, fibre, and micronutrients rather than calorie counts alone. “This is personal for me. I’ve carried the guilt that Zomato made it easy to eat whatever you craved, but not easy to eat what your body needed. Healthy Mode is our first real step in putting that right,” he added.
AI-Powered Scoring
The scoring system is powered by artificial intelligence and restaurant data. “Behind the scenes it’s AI and restaurant data doing the heavy lifting, but what you’ll see is simple: a clear explanation of what makes a dish healthy, and why,” Goyal said.
Partnerships with Air India and MakeMyTrip
The announcement follows Zomato’s recent collaborations. Air India has partnered with Zomato to link its Maharaja Club loyalty programme, offering travel rewards on food orders above ₹499. Meanwhile, online travel firm MakeMyTrip has tied up with Zomato to allow train passengers to order meals delivered directly to their seats, along with live PNR status updates and real-time train tracking.
