India and Russia Discuss MoU to Strengthen Agricultural Trade and Technology Cooperation

India and Russia are moving towards deeper collaboration in agriculture, with talks underway to formalise a memorandum of understanding that will expand trade and technology partnerships between the two nations.

On 26 September, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan met Russian Deputy Minister for Agriculture Dmitry Patrushev to discuss ways of boosting agricultural exports from India to Russia and increasing cooperation across the sector. The talks highlighted the mutual interest of both countries in strengthening agricultural trade, technology adoption, and innovation.

Minister Chauhan outlined India’s agricultural priorities, including ensuring food security, enhancing farmer incomes, and making safe and nutritious food accessible. He described India’s relationship with Russia as one of “exemplary level of mutual trust and understanding” and referred to the ancient Indian principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, or “the world is one family,” to stress the value of global partnerships for farmers’ welfare and food security worldwide.

Deputy Minister Patrushev reiterated Russia’s commitment to agricultural cooperation and expressed strong interest in formalising the partnership through a memorandum of understanding. Both sides explored joint work in areas such as seed traceability systems, research and development, and technical exchanges that could help accelerate innovation and modern farming practices.

The talks also addressed opportunities to expand education and scholarship initiatives for students pursuing agricultural studies, pointing to a shared vision for capacity-building and knowledge exchange between the two nations.

This meeting marks a significant step forward in India-Russia relations in agriculture, combining trade, technology, and skill development to benefit farmers and build a more sustainable sector.
