A 59-year-old retired teacher from Jivraj Park has fallen victim to a digital arrest scam, losing Rs 38.70 lakh over nine days after being manipulated by cyber fraudsters. The victim filed a complaint with the city cyber cell on Tuesday.
According to the FIR, the incident began on September 12 when the victim received a WhatsApp call from a man posing as a TRAI official named Ajay Mehta. The caller falsely claimed that a SIM card registered with the victim’s Aadhaar in Mumbai was being used to circulate pornographic content and that a case had been registered with the Mumbai Police.
On September 15, the scammers staged a fake courtroom proceeding over a video call. They informed the victim that he would remain under “surveillance” for a week and must transfer funds for “verification.” Under pressure and fear, the retired teacher made repeated transfers via bank accounts and RTGS, amounting to Rs 38.70 lakh.
The ordeal lasted until September 21, when the fraudsters abruptly cut off all contact. Realising he had been deceived, the victim reported the matter to the cybercrime cell, which has launched an investigation into the case.
Authorities have urged citizens to stay vigilant against such scams and not to trust unsolicited calls demanding money under the guise of legal or official procedures.
