Vodafone Idea Plans Satellite-Based Mobile Services by 2026, Rules Out Fixed Wireless Access

Vodafone Idea has announced plans to offer commercial satellite communication services by 2026, aiming to provide space-based cellular broadband through a partnership with AST SpaceMobile. The company is in discussions with the Department of Telecommunications to secure regulatory approvals, with leadership indicating full readiness is likely by next year.

The partnership with AST SpaceMobile is focused on delivering direct-to-device satellite network coverage to remote and underserved areas in India. The service is expected to support voice, video, and broadband connectivity directly on smartphones without the need for additional hardware or apps. A commercial launch is anticipated around mid-2026, following the allocation of necessary spectrum, licensing, and satellite deployment.

At the same time, Vodafone Idea has confirmed that it has no plans to enter the Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) home broadband segment. Leadership noted that while FWA services complement offerings by competitors, such as Jio and Airtel, they do not align with Vodafone Idea’s current business strategy or core competencies. Broadband services currently contribute less than 2 percent to the company’s revenue, emphasizing its focus on mobility services.

Vodafone Idea’s ongoing 5G efforts are aimed at supporting the migration of users from 4G and 2G networks to maximize average revenue per user and reduce churn in competitive urban markets.

The satellite initiative is intended to support India’s Digital India goals and address connectivity gaps in regions where terrestrial networks face challenges. By avoiding FWA, Vodafone Idea aims to conserve capital, reduce direct competition with fiber-focused incumbents, and concentrate on serving its existing subscriber base and new rural or remote markets through satellite services.

In summary, Vodafone Idea’s strategy combines innovation in satellite connectivity with a conservative approach to fixed-line broadband, focusing on its core strengths in mobile wireless services while preparing for a significant expansion in rural and underserved areas by 2026.
