Asia’s Largest International Airport to Open Next Month in Noida

Noida International Airport at Jewar, Asia’s largest airport, is set to be inaugurated on October 30, with commercial operations expected to begin within 45 days, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu announced.

The launch phase will connect at least 10 cities, making it the National Capital Region’s second major airport after Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Airlines including IndiGo and Akasa Air have confirmed plans to start operations, with initial routes to Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata under discussion.

The airport project spans 1,334 hectares and is being developed in four phases. Phase one features a 3,900-metre runway and a terminal capable of handling 12 million passengers annually. Ultimately, the airport will accommodate up to 70 million passengers per year. Officials expect about six million passengers in the first year.

Core infrastructure is largely complete. The runway and air traffic control tower are ready, terminal structures built, aerobridges installed, and baggage handling systems and e-gates operational. Interior works such as seating, lighting, toilets, and galleries are in the final stages. The DGCA licence remains the last major requirement before flight operations can start.

Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd, the airport concessionaire, confirmed that finishing works and technical installations are progressing. Operational Readiness and Transition trials, including simulations, baggage system testing, and ground handler familiarisation, are underway. IndiGo signed an MoU in November 2023 as the launch carrier, following a validation flight in December. Akasa Air has also committed to a strong presence at the airport.

Beyond passenger services, Jewar is being positioned as a major cargo hub for northern India. Its location near the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and Dedicated Freight Corridor enhances its potential as a logistics gateway, contributing to India’s growing air cargo ecosystem.

Naidu also announced upcoming nationwide airport upgrades. Free WiFi will be available at all airports within two months, and libraries and dedicated kids’ zones will be added within three months to improve passenger experience.

At the same event, Naidu highlighted Hindon Airport’s expansion, which now connects 16 cities. However, terminal capacity remains constrained, and the Airports Authority of India has requested nine hectares of additional land from the Uttar Pradesh government to expand terminal space and add aircraft parking bays.
