Mark Zuckerberg, founder and chief executive officer of Meta Platforms, was left red faced during the company’s Connect Developers Conference at its Menlo Park headquarters on September 17, after multiple glitches disrupted the live demonstration of the new Meta Ray Ban Display smart glasses.
Touted as an upgrade to previous versions and introduced alongside the performance focused Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses, the device was expected to highlight new features such as a built in display and an AI powered neural wristband. However, the presentation was marred by repeated failures that Zuckerberg attributed to unstable Wi Fi.
During one segment, food creator Jack Mancuso attempted to showcase the glasses’ AI assistant by asking for a recipe for a Korean inspired steak sauce. Instead of offering clear step by step instructions, the assistant gave confusing responses and out of sequence directions. At one point, it insisted, “You’ve already combined the base ingredients, so now grate the pear,” despite the ingredients not being prepared. Mancuso tried several times to redirect the AI before handing the feed back to Zuckerberg, who also pointed to Wi Fi issues as the cause of the disruption. “The irony of all this whole thing is that you spend years making technology and then the Wi Fi on the day kinda… catches you. We’ll go check out what he made later,” Zuckerberg told the amused audience.
Technical problems continued when Zuckerberg demonstrated the neural wristband, which is designed to interpret subtle hand movements for tasks such as sending messages, controlling media, and activating Meta AI. While he was able to send a message to Meta’s chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth, the system failed to pick up Bosworth’s return call, with repeated gestures on stage going unanswered. After several failed attempts, Bosworth joined Zuckerberg on stage, and once again the unstable Wi Fi was cited as the culprit. “That’s too bad, I don’t know what happened… You practice these things like 100 times, and then, you never know what’s going to happen,” Zuckerberg remarked.
The series of glitches turned what was meant to be a showcase of Meta’s cutting edge wearable technology into an awkward moment, underlining the challenges of demonstrating advanced AI driven hardware live.
