Transportation technology in India is now counted among the best globally, with artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and microprocessors being integrated into railway manufacturing and maintenance, according to East Coast Railway general manager Parmeshwar Funkwal.
Speaking at a symposium on Vision 2047: Technological Advancements in Indian Railways, organised by the Engineers’ Association on Engineers’ Day, Funkwal stressed that engineers must keep pace with rapid technological changes to help India achieve its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
Honouring the legacy of legendary engineer Bharatratna M Visvesvaraya, chief workshop manager of Mancheswar carriage repair workshop Amit Sinha urged engineers to draw inspiration from his pioneering contributions.
In a detailed presentation, association general secretary BP Dash highlighted that Indian Railways transported 1.61 billion tonnes of freight in the last financial year, surpassing the United States and making it the second-largest transporter in the world. He outlined various technological initiatives being adopted by Indian Railways as part of India’s development journey.
Founder advisor of the association Bobin Mohanty commended the relentless efforts of railway engineers, saying they are working tirelessly to bring Indian Railways on par with systems in developed countries. He further emphasised that engineers should be encouraged and supported in fulfilling their professional needs.
The event began with a presentation on the life and work of Visvesvaraya, and association president IA Khan also addressed the gathering. More than 200 engineers attended the symposium.
