Qualcomm Introduces Quick Charge 5 Plus for Faster and Cooler Charging

Qualcomm has unveiled Quick Charge 5 Plus, its latest fast-charging technology designed to make smartphones charge faster while keeping them cooler. The company’s Quick Charge solution has been around for over a decade, but this marks the first major update since 2020.

Like Quick Charge 5, the new standard supports charging speeds of over 100W. However, Qualcomm says Quick Charge 5 Plus goes further by offering lower device temperatures and a more stable charging experience. Since excessive heat is one of the main causes of battery wear and tear, this update is expected to help extend battery health while still delivering high-speed charging.

Quick Charge 5 Plus achieves this by intelligently adjusting voltage and current. The system can maintain peak charging speeds for longer while reducing heat build-up, and it is capable of pushing up to 140W of power at 20V and 7A.

One of the biggest highlights is its backward compatibility. The new standard supports all earlier versions, from Quick Charge 2 onwards, meaning most smartphones launched in the last decade can take advantage of it.

Qualcomm also confirmed that the technology is not limited to Snapdragon-powered devices. “Quick Charge also works seamlessly with devices powered by non-Snapdragon platforms, delivering a charging experience equivalent to competitors’ chargers,” the company said. This means it could also work with smartphones using chipsets like MediaTek and Exynos.

While Qualcomm has not revealed exact numbers on efficiency or speed improvements beyond reduced heat, it is expected that supported devices will see faster charging times compared to previous versions. The first devices featuring Quick Charge 5 Plus will be showcased at the Snapdragon Summit from 23 to 25 September, with compatible accessories like chargers expected to arrive in markets later this year.
