Cybercrime Costs Southwest Delhi Rs 30 Crore in Just Over Two Years

Residents of Southwest Delhi have lost nearly Rs 30 crore in cyber frauds over the last two-and-a-half years, with online trading scams and fake job offers emerging as the most common traps. Police records show that most victims fall in the age group of 18 to 44 years.

The data also reveals that several regions across India continue to drive these frauds. The Mewat belt covering Bharatpur and Mathura is known for sextortion and fake hotel booking scams. Jharkhand’s Jamtara and Deoghar remain centres for KYC and credit card reward-point frauds. Rajasthan’s Jodhpur and Barmer, along with parts of Gujarat, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, are identified as major suppliers of mule accounts used to route stolen funds.

In the Southwest district, cyber police have registered 90 cases this year till September 4. Fraudsters managed to dupe victims of Rs 5.07 crore, of which police have solved 56 cases, arrested 147 accused, and recovered Rs 2.27 crore. Out of the total cases, 42 are from 2025, while the rest are older cases from 2021 and 2022.

The trend of rising cybercrime has been consistent over the years. In 2024, 112 cases were reported, with victims losing Rs 15.8 crore. Police solved 57 cases, arresting 185 people and recovering Rs 4.83 crore. In 2023, 100 cases were filed and 42 solved, with losses of Rs 9.05 crore but only Rs 36 lakh recovered. That year, 105 people were arrested.

So far in 2025, online trading scams lead with 25 reported cases, followed by 12 fake job offer scams. There have also been nine cases of debit and credit card or SIM-swap frauds, seven incidents of “digital arrest” scams, and six each related to cyberbullying and electricity bill frauds. Other forms of fraud include fake social media profiles, impersonation, matrimonial frauds, and identity theft.

Police said cybercrime networks remain deeply rooted and are constantly evolving, posing a challenge to law enforcement despite rising arrests and recoveries.
